Kaiser Permanente and Warrior Centric Health Team Up to Enhance Care for Military Veterans and Families in the Mid-Atlantic Region
Rockville, Maryland — Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic and Warrior Centric Health, are coming together to recognize and address the unique needs of a vulnerable and often underserved population – the Warrior Community. This community of military Veterans, active duty, National Guard, Reservists, and their families represents close to a quarter of the population in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Through this partnership, Kaiser Permanente will provide training for physicians, nurses, and health care staff in the Mid-Atlantic region to help them meet the unique and specialized needs of the military community and Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic members.
“At Kaiser Permanente we have cared for service members and their families in this region for decades and are proud to provide comprehensive care that is unique to the needs of this important patient population by partnering with Warrior Centric Health,” said Dr. Farzaneh Sabi, Associate Medical Director at Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic, a proud Navy veteran and obstetrician and gynecologist. “Warrior Centric Health’s approach to providing education on caring for this population of service members makes them a natural fit for Kaiser Permanente as we continue our journey to understand how military service impacts the health of our patients and the best ways for military service members and veterans to experience our exceptional care across our region.”
Kaiser Permanente currently serves more than 800,000 members in the Mid-Atlantic region. The trainings provided by Warrior Centric Health will focus on culturally competent care for active-duty service members, Veterans and military families, communication, and supportive care strategies, as well as specific medical and mental health conditions that warriors experience at higher rates, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Through the WCH partnership, care team members in the Mid-Atlantic will receive specialized training to meet the comprehensive health needs of the warrior community members receiving care at Kaiser Permanente.
“By combining our decades of expertise in Warrior Community health with new technologies, we’re able to scale population health management to fit the enormous need,” says Mr. Ronald Steptoe, 8th generation military veteran, West Point Graduate and Veteran Army Captain. “Forward-thinking healthcare institutions such as Kaiser Permanente—who share our commitment to health equity—don’t have to wait to address what is truly a national obligation. The Warrior Community represents about $300 billion in health insurance costs annually, so the financial imperatives are also there. By becoming Authorized Warrior Centric Health Facilities™, every healthcare institution can step up to the plate right now.”
Warrior Centric Health has developed custom data analytics, strategic Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Education (CME/CE) accredited education and training, awareness-building outreach tools, and credentialing flow to the facility’s providers and support staff when and where they need it. By sharing this suite of tools and resources with Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic region, both organizations will help to improve the culturally competent care delivered to members of the Warrior community within Kaiser Permanente’s 36 medical centers within the MidAtlantic region.
“We recognize that each of our members at Kaiser Permanente is unique and that Warrior Community patients deserve care that takes into account not only their individual culture and risk factors, but the culture and risk factors unique to their service to experience good health throughout their lives,” said Gracelyn McDermott, Vice President Marketing, Sales and Business Development for Kaiser Permanente in the Mid-Atlantic “We are honored to work with Warrior Centric Health to further advance the education of our workforce specific to this space in the Mid-Atlantic region as we continuously deliver the most effective care to these important patients.
